Under a tree an easel, before which stands Marlowe, palette and truh in hand, regarding a picture. Judge Crotchet seated apart reading. Enter Panshawe, from the house. Approaches and lays his hand on Marlowe's shoulder. Mar. What, Fanshawe! You at last? Well, you are a strange fellow—to leave me here for a mouth without letting me know what had become of you! I was beginning to think that something very serious had happened to you. Fun. No, nothing serious has happened to me—more than hard work. I have been rushing to completion a novel I had under way. But that is finished, thank the Lord, and now here I am, and ready to progress that romance in actual life that we projected in the garden of that tavern a month ago. How is it getting on? Mar. Splendidly. It is so far successful that I might say that I am, as you predicted, lifted out of that slough of poverty and obscurity into which I had fallen. Some of my pictures have been exhibited here among the Colonel's guests, and the result is that I have orders enough to keep me at work for two years. Fan. Good! And now your star shines again. From this diiy you are going to be the fashion. And so there will be some hope that America will know a great artist some time before he is dead. But this is only a part of the play, my friend. That other part, that we agreed upon, by which the daughter of the house was to be rescued from an unworthy suitor—how is that getting ou? Mar. Well,—I can't say that that part of the—play, as you call it—is progressing very brilliantly. Fan. Indeed! And wherefore? Mar. For the reason that I find the part rather difficult to enact.
